Description :-
It is a hard and brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic lustre; and it is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel belongs to the transition metals and is hard and ductile. Pure nickel, powdered to maximize the reactive surface area, shows a significant chemical activity, but larger pieces are slow to react with air under standard conditions because an oxide layer forms on the surface and prevents further corrosion (passivation). Even so, pure native nickel is found in Earth’s crust only in tiny amounts, usually in ultramafic rocks, and in the interiors of larger nickel–iron meteorites that were not exposed to oxygen when outside Earth’s atmosphere. Nickel is one of four elements (the others are iron, cobalt, and gadolinium) that are ferromagnetic at approximately room temperature. Alnico permanent magnets based partly on nickel are of intermediate strength between iron-based permanent magnets and rare-earth magnets.

Stainless steel depends on chromium for its appearance and resistance to corrosion. Average chrome content in stainless steel is approx. 18%. It is also used to add chromium to carbon steel. FeCr from South Africa, known as "charge chrome" and produced from a Cr containing ore with a low carbon content, is most commonly used in stainless steel production. Fernico describe a family of metal alloys made primarily of iron, nickel and cobalt. The family includes Kovar, FerNiCo I, FerNiCo II, and Dumet. The name is made up of the chemical symbols of its constituent three elements. "Dumet" is a portmanteau of "dual" and "metal," because it is a heterogeneous alloy, usually fabricated in the form of a wire with an alloy core and a copper cladding. These alloys possess the properties of electrical conductivity, minimal oxidation and formation of porous surfaces at working temperatures of glass and thermal coefficients of expansion which match glass closely. These requirements allow the alloys to be used in glass seals, such that the seal does not crack, fracture or leak with changes in temperature.

It is a shiny gray metal having a low density, low melting point and high chemical reactivity. Ni-Cr-Co is a metal alloy of cobalt and chromium. Ni-Cr-Co has a very high specific strength and is commonly used in gas turbines, dental implants, and orthopedic implants. Ni-Cr-Co alloys show high resistance to corrosion due to the spontaneous formation of a protective passive film composed of mostly Cr2O3, and minor amounts of cobalt and other metal oxides on the surface. As its wide application in biomedical industry indicates, Co-Cr alloys are well known for their biocompatibility. Biocompatibility also depends on the film and how this oxidized surface interacts with physiological environment. Good mechanical properties that are similar to stainless steel are a result of a multiphase structure and precipitation of carbides, which increase the hardness of Ni-Cr-Co alloys tremendously. Moreover, tensile and fatigue strength increases radically as they are heat-treated. However, Ni-Cr-Co alloys tend to have low ductility, which can cause component fracture. This is a concern as the alloys are commonly used in hip replacements. In order to overcome the low ductility, nickel, carbon, and/or nitrogen are added. These elements stabilize the γ phase, which has better mechanical properties compared to other phases of Ni-Cr-Co alloys.

Description :-
Samarium is a chemical element with the symbol Sm and atomic number 62. It is a moderately hard silvery metal that slowly oxidizes in air. Being a typical member of the lanthanide series, samarium usually assumes the oxidation state +3. Compounds of samarium are also known, most notably the monoxide SmO, monochalcogenides SmS, SmSe and SmTe, as well as samarium iodide. The last compound is a common reducing agent in chemical synthesis. Samarium has no significant biological role but is only slightly toxic. The main commercial application of samarium is in samarium cobalt magnets, which have permanent magnetization second only to neodymium magnets; however, without losing their magnetic properties, due to the alloy's higher Curie point. The radioisotope samarium-153 is the active component of the drug samarium lexidronam (Quadramet), which kills cancer cells in lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and osteosarcoma. It also forms as a decay product during the reactor operation and is one of the important factors considered in the reactor design and operation.
