Description
Predominantly single phase (92–94 vol.%), fully dense samples of Hf2SnC, Zr2SnC, Nb2SnC, Ti2SnC, Hf2PbC and Zr2PbC were fabricated by reactively HIPing the stoichiometric mixture of the corresponding elemental powders in the 1200–1325°C temperature range for 4–48 h. The latter two, fabricated here for the first time, required a further anneal of 48–96 h to increase the volume fraction of ternary phases. Hf2PbC and Zr2PbC are unstable in ambient atmospheres at room temperature. As a family these compounds are good electrical conductors; the lowest and highest values of the electrical conductivities were, respectively, 2.2×106 (Ω.m)−1 for Hf2SnC and 13.4×106 (Ω.m)−1 for Hf2PbC. The Vickers hardness values range from 3 to 4 GPa. All compounds are readily machinable.

Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant material known. It is used in special alloys and forms an alloy with osmium, which is used for pen tips and compass bearings. It was used in making the standard metre bar, which is an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium. It is also used for the contacts in spark plugs because of its high melting point and low reactivity. It is very dense and rare and is used in platinum alloys. The couple may contain varying proportions of copper and zinc; the zinc content is typically greater than 90%, although an alloy containing similar proportions of zinc and copper is used in some cases. The couple is frequently prepared as a darkly-colored powder and is slurried in an ethereal solvent prior to being used in slight excess relative to the substrate. Activation of zinc by copper is essential to the couple’s utility, but the origin of this effect is poorly documented. It is speculated that copper enhances reactivity of zinc at the surface of the alloy.

Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. Zinc is a slightly brittle metal at room temperature and has a silvery-greyish appearance when oxidation is removed. Corrosion-resistant zinc plating of iron (hot-dip galvanizing) is the major application for zinc. Other applications are in electrical batteries, small non-structural castings, and alloys such as brass. A variety of zinc compounds are commonly used, such as zinc carbonate and zinc gluconate (as dietary supplements), zinc chloride (in deodorants), zinc pyrithione (anti-dandruff shampoos), zinc sulfide (in luminescent paints), and dimethylzinc or diethylzinc in the organic laboratory.
